Mozilla plans to release Firefox 68.0.2 and Firefox ESR 68.0.2 on August 14, 2019 to the stable release channel. Firefox users who run the Stable version of the browser will be updated to the new version if they have not disabled automatic updates in the web browser.

Mozilla released Firefox 68.0 and Firefox ESR 68.0 on July 9, 2019 to the public. The bug fix release Firefox 68.0.1 followed on July 18, 2019.

Firefox downloads and installs updates automatically by default. You can speed up the process (after update release) by selecting Menu > Help > About Firefox from the main menu of the browser. Firefox runs a check for updates to download any that it finds.

Downloads will also become available on the official Mozilla website after the official release of the update.

Firefox 68.0.2

firefox 68.0.2

Firefox 68.0.2 and Firefox ESR 68.0.2 are bug fix releases that fix several issues in the browser. The issues are not security related.

Here is what is fixed in the new release:

  • A bug caused some characters, e.g. #, $, or %, to be cut off when users searched from the URL bar of the browser. In other words: some special characters were not included in searches from the URL bar.
  • Fonts may be loaded via file:// instructions if the web page referencing the resource is loaded locally.
  • The Outlook web app printing issue is fixed. Firefox would print only the header and footer when printing emails in the web version of Outlook.
  • A bug that caused some images not to be displayed anymore on reload. The issue did affect several sites and services including Google Maps.
  • An issue that prevented some file and protocol handlers from working correctly when set up to start external applications using URI handlers.

Firefox users who are affected by at least one of the bugs may want to consider updating the browser to the new version immediately to fix these issues.

The next stable version of Firefox, Firefox 69.0, is scheduled for a release on September 3, 2019.

Now You: Did you run into any of these issues?

I’ve been doing a little bit of distrohopping in the last week or so to take a look at new systems being developed and to try a few I haven’t had a look at in a while; MX Linux being one of the latter.

The last time I touched MX Linux was at least two or three years ago, and I remember that I wasn’t a fan at the time. However, I’m really happy to say that my opinion of the OS has changed with my latest dive into it.

Test machine specs:

  • Ryzen 5 2600X
  • 16GB DDR4 3000Mhz
  • NVIDIA GTX 1070
  • MSI X470 GAMING PLUS Motherboard

Installation of MX Linux

Installation of MX Linux was an absolute breeze, with one of the easiest graphical installation tools I have used thus far in my Linux history.

I would like to point out that the addition of changing services that are being installed was a rather nice touch – I don’t have a printer and do not use any printing related services...So having the option to not even install such a service was quite handy.

There are numerous configuration and customization options available throughout the entire installation process that I personally found really enhanced the installation experience.

Using MX Linux

MX Linux

MX Linux is based off Debian's stable branch, so you can expect rock solid stability. The choice of using Xfce as default for MX Linux is also great due to its low resource requirements and great visual customization ability.

By default MX Linux places a panel along the left-border of the screen, which personally I wasn’t a fan of so I moved it to the bottom, and also includes the popular Whisker Menu for it’s default application menu; I switched it for a basic cascading-style menu as I’ve never personally been a fan of the Whisker Menu, though there’s nothing actually wrong with it, just a matter of preference.

The OS comes with your typical stock of software ranging from the Clementine Media Player, to VLC, to Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice. However, MX Linux actually comes with a rather wide stock of software – I’d almost call it bloat except for the fact that most of it is specifically chosen lightweight, or custom MX Tools that greatly allow for customization of almost every aspect of your system.

Really, I can’t call it bloat...MX Linux just has a lot of customization readily-accessible. If you’re the type of user that, like me, enjoys tweaking your system to pieces and customizing everything to suit your needs, MX Linux will not disappoint.

Just to name some of the different tools available:

  • MX Boot Repair
  • MX Cleanup (think Ccleaner)
  • MX Conky (edit the conky information display tool that shows system info on your desktop as an overlay.)
  • MX Live USB Maker
  • MX Network Assistant
  • MX Package Installer
  • MX Repo Manager
  • MX Tweak
  • MX User Manager
  • Nvidia Driver Installer
  • Midnight Commander (old but powerful file-manager)

There’s more... I just didn’t want to type them all – Again suffice to say that MX Linux will not disappoint your inner tweaker.

Resource Usage

While writing this I had the following running (check out my list of essential Linux applications)

  • Clementine with .FLAC lossless audio playing through PulseAudio
  • Firefox with 2 tabs open
  • Two terminal windows
  • LibreOffice Writer

Average RAM usage was 1.32GB/15.7GB
Average CPU usage was 11%

I have to comment and say that MX Linux flies. It was blazing fast to launch any application or do any task I gave it; and I did not have it installed on my SSD, just a 7200RPM standard Seagate drive.

Final thoughts

MX Linux has impressed me with this latest edition, and I may very well return to it in the future. What about you? Do you use MX Linux, and if so, what are your reasons for using it? Let us know in the comments!

If you have been to the streaming video site YouTube lately you may have noticed that the design of the homepage changed.

Google is apparently at it again with yet another test that changes the layout of the homepage of YouTube. The company uses A-B tests to analyze changes and help with the decision making process; the data helps Google decide whether a change should be implemented or not.

This particular change is visible to a fraction of the user base only at the time of writing. The YouTube homepage displays larger thumbnails when you open it; the current homepage displays small thumbnails next to each other. The video suggestions are sorted into groups such as recommended, from your subscriptions, or specific channels that you watched in the past or that others watched.

The new design does away with the grouping of content. Instead, all you get is a never ending stream of video listings supported by large thumbnails.

youtube-new design large thumbnails

The new large thumbnail design is active on the YouTube homepage only. When you search, or browse subscriptions or trending listings, you will get the standard layouts.

The new design puts video thumbnails front and center. You might want to install the YouTube Clickbait Remover extension to prevent misuse of custom thumbnails on the site.

One effect of larger thumbnails is that you see fewer videos at a time. On my system, YouTube showed just six videos, two of them only half, on a page. The old design showed nine videos on a page without scrolling.

Closing Words

Large video thumbnails may look nicer and they may work better on TV screens even. The experience may be different on the desktop. YouTube displays fewer videos on a page which results in more scrolling. The removal of groups makes the whole homepage look even more random than before as you get even fewer control over what is displayed.

You could hide certain channels recommended to you in the old design, the new does not display any groups or channels so that the option is not there anymore.

Don't like videos from a particular channel recommended to you over and over again? The only option left is to use third-party tools to block content on YouTube.

The change feels more like another attempt to remove choice from YouTube, not that there has been much to begin with, and spoon feed videos that YouTube's algorithm selects to users. Yes, there is search and subscriptions that give you some control, but the clear simplification trend continues unhindered.

It is possible that the new design will be discarded again.

Now You: what is your take on the new design?

How to download and install the August 2019 security updates

microsoft windows security updates august 2019

Home computer systems running Windows are configured to download and install updates automatically. It is recommended to wait with the installation of updates or create backups of the system before updates are installed; updates may introduce issues of their own on systems including major issues that may prevent PCs from booting into Windows.

You may run manual checks for updates to speed up the installation of the new updates

  1. Tap on the Windows-key, type Windows Update, and select the result.
  2. A click on "check for updates" runs a manual check. Updates may be installed automatically or on user request depending on system settings.

Another option that you have is to download the updates manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

We have seen and reviewed plenty of note taking applications in the past including tomboy-ng, Boostnote and Joplin which we reviewed recently here on Ghacks. But here's one which works right in your web browser.

Tab Notes lets you write and save notes in Firefox and Chrome. It is from the same developer who is behind the excellent Textarea Cache add-on.

How does it work?

Tab Notes

Once you install the browser extension in chrome or Firefox, it works out of the box. To begin using it, just open a new tab to get to the note interface. The extension takes over the New Tab Page of the web browser.

Type something in the page, it doesn't get simpler than this. You can use it to create as many notes as you want. To add a new note, click on the hamburger menu icon on the left to bring up the side bar, and then select the "Plus" button. And since it works in the browser, it uses the default spell-check tool of the browser.

The add-on displays the first few words of a note in the side-panel which you can use for identification and quickly navigating between notes.

You can have multiple instances of Tab Notes open at the same time by opening multiple new tab pages in the web browser; this allows you to work on multiple notes at the same time or display multiple notes in different tabs.

Tab Notes can be a priceless tool if you want to quickly jot down something like ideas or a to-do list. You could even use it to save links, though they appear as text, so you'll need to copy and paste them. The extension is available for Firefox and Chrome (I tested it in Edge Chromium).

How do you save the notes? You don't have to because your notes are saved automatically as you type. The notes are persistent, i.e., they remain after you close the browser and restart it. I'd advise you to backup the notes manually using a text editor so you don't lose any important information though; running a cleaning tool on the system could very well delete the data.

Closing Words

The main issue with Tab Notes is that it takes over the New Tab Page. This can be a problem if you were using a different add-on for the new tab functionality (like Group Speed Dial) or use the New Tab Page actively. There is no workaround for this which means that you are left with one or the other but not both. Many add-ons open a new tab with their own options, perhaps the dev could do the same.

The other major con, and this is very subjective, is the complete lack of customization in Tab Notes. I mean there is literally nothing that you can change, not even a bold/italics toggle, or font type or size selector. I was really hoping to try the dark theme, but it appears that the add-on uses the browser's theme settings.

Support for links or images could be a very useful addition as well, but it could remove a bit if the lightness of the note taking experience.

Tab Notes is not meant to be a text editor. It is a simple note taking add-on so some people may find the bare bones approach to be better. The developer has mentioned he is working on Markdown support; you can follow the development on GitHub if you are interested.

Tab Notes is an open source project, and does not require any permissions at all.

So, I recently did a bunch of distro-hopping to test out some systems I am unfamiliar with, and I found an issue that persisted regardless of what I was running; if I kept my speakers plugged-in to the front audio-jack and kept my headphones plugged-in to the rear audio-jack, my headphones would produce no audio.

The tools I used to troubleshoot the issues were PulseAudio and ALSA. If you are new to Linux, check out or getting started with audio on Linux guide.

First, I checked to see if pulseaudio recognized the sound devices as being plugged-in by opening the PulseAudio Volume Control application via terminal using the pavucontrol command.

pavucontrol

I found that PulseAudio was only recognizing my front audio-jack as plugged in, though it did tell me that my Line-Out was unplugged, so it at least recognized Line-Out but unfortunately not the plugged-in headphones.

Next, I tried going through the Configuration tab and Output Devices tabs changing various options around, applying the changes, and restarting Clementine to see if anything worked...Nope.

Then, I decided it was time to get a little more serious, and poked into the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) mixer application:

alsamixer

When first opening alsamixer you may or may not automatically be presented with the sound device / sound card you are looking to modify (I was presented with my HDMI as default, for example).

To change the device you are editing, hit the F6 key and select the device to edit; mine was called HD-Audio Generic. You may need to select different devices one after the other to find the right device if you don't know its exact name.

Once your device is selected, using your keyboard arrow-keys, scroll to the right until you find a setting called Auto-Mute – If this is defaulted to enabled then it must be changed by using your up/down arrow keys to disabled, and then you can hit the escape key to exit.

Doing so enabled me to have audio route to my headphones. However, I could hear audio through both speakers and headphones at the same time now.

To fix this I returned to pavucontrol inside the Output Devices tab and inspected what devices were listed. My speakers were listed as Headphones (Plugged in) but my headphones plugged into the rear audio-jack still were listed as Line-out (unplugged). However, for fun, I selected the Line-out device and was surprised to hear that my speakers went silent and my headphones remained active, solving the issue.

Tip: check out how to enhance sound in Linux with PulseEffects.

Parting thoughts

It’s a slight annoyance that this happened, and that my device is listed as unplugged despite that I am listening to music while I write this through that very set of headphones...But it works.

This fix should be applicable on pretty (almost) well any system encountering this issue, providing it uses ALSA and PulseAudio. Hope it helps!

Mozilla plans to make changes to the information that the organization's Firefox browser displays in its address bar when it connects to sites.

Firefox displays an i-icon and a lock symbol currently when connecting to sites. The i-icon displays information about the security of the connection, content blocking, and permissions, the lock icon indicates the security state of the connection visually. A green lock indicates a secure connection and if a site has an Extended Validation certificate, the name of the company is displayed in the address bar as well.

Mozilla plans to make changes to the information that is displayed in the browser's address bar that all Firefox users need to be aware of.

One of the core changes removes the i-icon from the Firefox address bar, another the Extended Validation certificate name, a third displays a crossed out lock icon for all HTTP sites, and a fourth changes the color of the lock for HTTPS sites from green to gray.

Why are browser makers making these changes?

Most Internet traffic happens over HTTPS; latest Firefox statistics show that more than 79% of global pageloads happen using HTTPS and that it is already at more than 87% for users in the United States.

The shield icon was introduced to indicate to users that the connection to the site uses HTTPS and to give users options to look up certificate information. It made sense to indicate that to users back when only a fraction of sites used HTTPS.

With more and more connections using HTTPS, browser makers like Mozilla or Google decided that it was time to evaluate what is displayed to users in the address bar.

firefox no i-icon

Google revealed plans in 2018 to remove Secure and HTTPS indicators from the Chrome browser; Chrome 76, released in August 2019, does not display HTTPS or WWW anymore in the address bar by default.

Mozilla launched changes in Firefox in 2018, hidden behind a flag, to add a new "not secure" indicator to HTTP sites in Firefox.

Google and Mozilla plan to remove information that indicate that a site's connection is secure. It makes some sense, if you think about it, considering that most connections are secure on today's Internet. Instead of highlighting that a connection is secure, browsers will highlight if a connection is not secure instead.

The changes are not without controversy though. For more than two decades, Internet users were told that they needed to verify the security of sites by looking at the lock symbol in the browser's address bar. Mozilla does not remove the lock icon entirely in Firefox 70 and the organization won't touch the protocol in the address bar either at this point; that is better than what Google has already implemented in recent versions of Chrome.

The following changes will land in Firefox 70:

  • Firefox won't display the i-icon anymore in the address bar.
  • Firefox won't display the owner of Extended Verification certificates anymore in the address bar.
  • A shield icon is displayed that lists protection information.
  • The lock icon is still displayed, it displays certificate and permission information and controls.
  • HTTPS sites feature a gray lock icon.
  • All sites that use HTTP will be shown with a crossed out shield icon (previously only HTTP sites with login forms).

Mozilla aims to launch these changes in Firefox 70. The browser is scheduled for a release on October 23, 2019.

Firefox users may add a "not secure" indicator to the browser's address bar. Mozilla, just like Google, plans to display it for sites that use HTTP. The additional indicator needs to be enabled separately at the time of writing, it won't launch in Firefox 70.

  1. Load about:config in the Firefox address bar.
  2. Search for security.identityblock.show_extended_validation.
  3. Set the preference to TRUE to display the name of the owner of Extended Validation certificates in Firefox's address bar, or set it to FALSE to hide it.

The new gray icon for HTTPS sites can be toggled as well in the advanced configuration:

  1. On about:config, search for security.secure_connection_icon_color_gray
  2. Set the value to TRUE to display a gray icon for HTTPS sites, or set it to FALSE to return to the status quo.

Renaming a lot of files is a chore, even more so when the names are very different from each other. Windows Explorer / File Explorer features some basic mass-renaming options, but these don't cut it very often as the functionality is as basic as it gets.

But when you have to rename files using a similar name pattern it's always a good idea to use a renaming software such as Advanced Renamer to save some time.

Advanced Renamer is a free batch renaming utility for Windows

It is one of the most advanced programs out there to rename files and has a very good interface that makes it easy to use. Speaking of which the GUI consists of 3 panes, a naming method pane, a file selection pane and an information pane.

Advanced Renamer is available as a portable version and installer for Windows. It is free to use for personal use; commercial users need to buy a license to use it in business environments. The program supports the renaming of files and folders.

Adding the Files

To add the files or folders which you want to rename, select them using the "Add" menu or drag and drop them to the right pane in the program's interface. Each file you add is listed with its name, path and other information. The new filename is displayed there as well so that you know right away how filenames will look like with the selected renaming settings.

The toolbar that is displayed at the top of the file pane lists tools to change the order of files, customize columns, or enable or hide thumbnails.

Detailed information is displayed for the selected file in the file information pane including a file's name, creation, modification, and accessed date, and, for some file types, a preview image, GPS data, or dimensions. There is an EXIF Tool button to open the included tool to view, edit, or remove EXIF data from files.

Configuring the renaming options

Let's move to the left pane. This is where you will configure the renaming options; just select the "add method" button to pick one of the available options such as new name, add, replace, or renumber from the list of available presets.

For basic renaming you can use the New Name method. Type something in the text box and you will see that the "new filename" column is updated accordingly.

One example: let's say we want to organize a photo album. Camera apps use odd naming patterns that reveal nothing about the location, people, or event captured by these images.

To change the name of photos such as P6200951.JPG to 2018 Vacation - Summer.jpg, you'd simply type the new name into the "new name" field after selecting the method from the list of presets. The preview is updated automatically to reflect the change.

If you have added more than one photo to the program you will notice that there is an issue: you have multiple files and each of them has the same new filename which will produce conflicts. To correct this, you can add a tag to the naming method, such as the increasing number tag represented by <Inc Nr:1>; this adds a unique identifier to each filename.

You can add spaces and hyphens in the name, like I have done in the screenshot, to keep the filename clean, or remove any space to avoid conflicts with certain programs or services.

Once you do this you will see that the photos in our example are named 2018 Vacation - Summer 01, 2018 Vacation - Summer 02, and so on.

One strong feature of Advanced Renamer is that you can select multiple methods for rename jobs and use all kinds of tags including ID3/MP3 Tags, Image Tags, Date/Time Tags, GPS, Videos, TV Shows, and more. The TV Shows feature pulls information from a third-party website to add these to filenames automatically.

Advanced users can use regular expressions to find and replace characters.

The renaming of photo collections is just one example where renaming software can be of use. Other examples include bringing music and video libraries in order, renaming downloaded files so that they feature the month or year in the filename, or using media tags to add information to media filenames.

The preview of the new filename is one of the most helpful options of Advanced Renamer as it reflects any change you make right away. It is easy enough to correct any mistakes you make to get the job done correctly.

Note: if you select rename as the batch mode, source files will be renamed. You may also select move or copy to prevent that the source files are renamed.

Batch Renaming

Advanced Renamer 2

A click on the "start batch" button starts the renaming process. The program displays a confirmation prompt that lists the number of methods, files, and the batch mode. A click on start runs the operation.

Advanced Renamer displays a log of the process once you have hit the start button. It displays processes files, number of errors it encountered during operation and an option to open the error log to take a closer look at the errors.

The program renames files quickly: the entire process for 97 files took less than 30 seconds during one of the tests that I ran.

In case of issues with the renaming process, you can do one of 2 things. Use a different naming method, or the easier option which is "Undo last batch".? The latter displays a list of tasks that were completed, and lets you select the one which you can undo.

We have previously written about Bulk Rename Utility and ReNamer. Which renaming software do you use?

Closing Words

Advanced Renamer is a powerful software program for Windows to rename files. Simple rename jobs take less than a minute to configure and start thanks to the program's use of preset methods and default tags to choose from.

Plenty of advanced options are available, from using file metatags to combining multiple methods or using regular expressions to rename files using simple or complex patterns.

Now You: Which rename software, if any, do you use?

The Firefox web browser has had a few names since the release of the first experimental build back in 2002. First known as Phoenix, a name Mozilla had to drop because of a trademark dispute with Phoenix Technologies, and then known as Firebird, another name that Mozilla decided to drop because of the database server Firebird, Firefox was the third and final name of the web browser for a long time.

The release of Firefox 57 brought another change to the name; better, an addendum to the name as Mozilla called the browser Firefox Quantum with that release.

firefox quantum 57

The name Quantum was selected because it was an effort to push new technologies in the browser to improve all aspects of Firefox and reverse the downwards trend user-wise.

Firefox users who open the About page of the web browser right now will notice that Firefox Quantum is still used as the name of the browser.

Starting with Firefox 70, another name is displayed when users open the About page. The new name is Firefox Browser. The stable version will just display Firefox Browser whereas development versions will add the channel name underneath it, e.g. Nightly or Developer.

firefox browser nightly name

Firefox Nightly displays the new name of the browser already on the about page. Firefox users may notice that the logo changed as well. Mozilla selected a new logo for the Firefox browser and that new logo will be shown on the about page, on Mozilla's website, and other places.

Why Firefox Browser and not Firefox Quantum or just Firefox? It was clear from the get-go that Firefox Quantum was just a temporary name to highlight the major changes in the new versions of the browser.

Plain Firefox would not make much sense anymore either because of other projects that carry the Firefox brand. Mozilla launched plenty including Firefox Monitor, Firefox Send or Firefox Lockwise in recent years and plans to launch even more, e.g. Firefox Proxy, in the future.

To better distinguish the browser, Mozilla had to add something to the Firefox name; browser is the obvious choice and Mozilla decided to select it for the name.

Mozilla plans to roll out the changes when Firefox Stable hits version 70; Mozilla aims for a October 23, 2019 release according to the release schedule.

Closing Words

Firefox Browser is without doubt a better name than Firefox Quantum as it describes exactly what Firefox is. It does not come as a surprise that Mozilla picked Firefox as the name for all the products that it creates and not Mozilla as the brand awareness is much higher.

Microsoft Office documents that you save on your computer or device use the same generic icon by default. The only distinguishing factors are the filename and the location of the document because of that, the latter only if save Office documents to different folders.

Core Microsoft Office applications support a handy feature to add another distinguishing factor to the documents that you save: to change the generic icon to a thumbnail preview of the first page.

The feature does not require the installation of third-party applications or special file handlers as it is a feature of Microsoft Office 2016 and older versions.

word document preview no preview file icon

The feature is not enabled by default and you have the option to enable it for individual Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents only, or globally so that all Office documents are saved with a thumbnail that depicts the first page of the document.

Save preview images for individual Microsoft Office documents

word save thumbnail file icon

The feature works in all supported versions of Microsoft Office including Office 2013, 2016 and 2019 except for Office 365. Microsoft calls the feature "thumbnail" and not preview image or Word file icon; this makes it a bit difficult to understand when you encounter the option.

Do the following to save individual Word, Excel, or PowerPoing documents with thumbnails:

  1. Open the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document that you want to add a thumbnail to.
  2. Select File > Save As or use the keyboard shortcut F12 to save the document.
  3. Select a save location.
  4. In the Save As dialog, check "Save Thumbnail" at the bottom to make the first page the file icon on the system.
  5. Click Save to complete the process.

The saved document, regardless of whether it is a new document or one that you have created in the past, shows up with the preview image as its file icon on the system after the operation.

Save all Microsoft Office files with the thumbnail image

save thumbnails all office documents

If you like the thumbnail feature of Microsoft Word, you may want to configure Word to always save the thumbnail image so that you don't have to make sure that the box is checked whenever you save a file.

This should work in Office 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019 but not in Office 365.

Here is how that is done:

  1. Open any Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document on the system or create a blank one.
  2. Select File > Info.
  3. Click on the small arrow icon next to Properties and select Advanced Properties.
  4. In the Window that opens, check the "Save Thumbnails for all [..] Documents".
  5. Click ok.
  6. Repeat the process for the other document formats as the dialog makes the change for the Office application that you have used to make it only.

All Office documents that you save from that point on are saved with the preview image.

Now You: do you make use of the thumbnail feature in Office?

Many Android devices come with Google applications and services, even if the device is not a device created by Google itself but by another company. Google Assistant is available as a standalone application as well which Android users may install to integrate it on their device.

Two of the features that you may find on your Android device are OK Google and Google Assistant. OK Google is a tool that is activated by voice to run searches or certain actions. Google Assistant ties into that but can also be controlled via text.

If OK Google or Google Assistant are active on your Android device but you are not using these tools, you may want to consider disabling those.

You may remember that I bought a Google Pixel 3A device when it first came out to replace my trusted by aging Nokia 5.1 device. The Google device is chock-full when it comes to Google services and tools; OK Google and Google Assistant are a part of the device but I never use these services.

I don't have any use cases for these, don't want to talk to my phone, and don't like the privacy implications either.

One of the first things that I did was to go through the smartphone to disable any service or tool that I don't use. OK Google and Google Assistant were two of the features that I disabled. Here is how I did it.

Note: The way to disable Google Assistant and OK Google may be different depending on the Android version of the device. If you notice that you have to follow different steps to disable the features, let me know in the comments. If you figured it out, please share your experience in the comments so that others may benefit from it as well.

Disable OK Google

turn off ok google android

Here is how you disable OK Google on your device:

  1. Open the Google application on the Android device.
  2. Click on the "More" link when it opens.
  3. Now navigate to Settings > Voice > Voice Match
  4. Disable "Access with Voice Match", "Unlock with Voice Match", and "While Driving".

Disable Google Assistant

turn off google assistant android

Google Assistant is disabled in the Google settings on the device, not in the Google application.

  1. Open the Settings on the device.
  2. Select Google and use it to navigate to Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant.
  3. In the Google Assistant settings, switch to the Assistant tab.
  4. Scroll down until you find the list of Assistant devices.
  5. Select your device.
  6. Turn off "Google Assistant" on the screen that opens.

Closing Words

Disabling does not mean that these two services are removed entirely from the device. You still get the voice icon in the search field but a tap on the icon displays a "turn on" prompt indicating that Google Assistant is turned off.

Now You: do you use voice search or assistants on your devices?

Mozilla has been working on integrating site isolation in the Firefox web browser for a while. Called Project Fission, the goal is to improve security in the Firefox web browser by isolating content by site in the browser.

Firefox uses a multi-process system currently that divides website content and browser specific content using multiple processes. Multiple sites may share a process and one of the main goals of Project Fission is to isolate these, including cross-site iframes, entirely.

Google implemented site isolation in its Chrome browser in 2018 stating that the feature improved security and stability of the browser. Google noted however that the feature would increase memory usage by about 20% on average.

Firefox users could enable Fission when the Nightly version hit version 69 already but this was mostly useful for internal testing of functionality. Now, with the release of Firefox 70 Nightly comes an official "go" from the organization to test the new site isolation feature.

firefox site isolation fission autostart

Site isolation is not enabled by default in the Firefox web browser at the time of writing. Users need to enable Fission to make use of it. When it is enabled, Firefox will load any cross-site iframe in its own content process.

When Fission is enabled, each cross-site iframe is loaded in a different content process, meaning lots of different processes participate in drawing? a single tab. The hover tooltip for a Fission-enabled tab is annotated with a "[F …]" containing a series of process IDs, as shown in the image below, serving as a visual verification of an active Fission-enabled session.

You may hover over any tab in the Firefox web browser after enabling Fission to display the process IDs used by Firefox to display that website.

firefox processes fission

Site Isolation is still a work in progress. Mozilla notes that it should be used for testing and not day-to-day browsing as users may experience stability and functionality issues because of open bugs.

Firefox users may also check the remote processes listed on the about:support page of the web browser to list web isolated processes.

Closing Words

Site Isolation improves the stability and security of the Firefox browser when enabled at the expense of increased memory usage. Memory usage will likely increase by about the same percentage that Chrome's memory usage increased after the implementation; this would mean an increase of about 20%.

Mozilla has yet to pick a release target for the new feature.

Google is rolling out a change currently on Android that affects customers who use the Reminders feature of the Google application.

The Google application is installed on many Android devices and one of its features is called Reminders. It provides customers with options to set reminders, e.g. to make sure that you don't forget a birthday, buy certain products, or remember the room number on a trip.

Google started to roll out a major update a couple of days ago that finally broke with the group notifications view of reminders. The group view merged multiple reminders into a group which made it impossible to deal with them on a one on one basis in Android's notifications area.

google reminders assistant android

The change that is rolled out now impacts all users of the Reminders feature. A report on Android Police suggests that Google moved Reminders under the Google Assistant umbrella. Means: if you have disabled Google Assistant or if Google Assistant is not available in your region, you cannot use Reminders anymore.

You need to use another feature for reminders, e.g. setting up events in Calendar instead.

Users from a region in which Google Assistant is available in have the following experience once the change lands: instead of adding or editing reminders in the Google application, you are taken to the Google Assistant application directly.? If you have turned Google Assistant off, you get a prompt to turn it back on first as you won't be able to use the reminders feature otherwise anymore.

Google customers who used Reminders to add "Place" reminders will notice that the option is no longer available in the new interface. It is possible that it gets added back at a later point in time but there is no guarantee for that. The only option, apparently, is to communicate with Assistant directly by saying something like "remind me to [something] when I get to [place]".

Closing Words

Google has not announced the change yet and it is unclear if it ever will. We don't know why the company is making the change but the most likely explanation is that it is interested in getting customers to use Google Assistant.

I have to admit that I don't use Google Assistant or the Google application on Android. I use the Calendar to set up reminders instead which works just fine

Now You: Do you use Google Assistant or Reminders? What is your take on the change?

About a month ago, I wrote an article about a KeePass client for iOS, called Strongbox. I also mentioned an alternative app named KeePassium and that I followed development of the application on GitHub and Reddit for a while.

KeePassium Password Manager is an application for Apple's iOS operating system.

I looked at the free version of the app exclusively. There is a premium version available for $11.99 per year that lifts the 1 database limit to unlimited and unlocks additional settings.

Let's take a closer look at the app.

How it works

KeePassium is an open-source KeePass client for iOS

KeePassium's interface is clean, minimal and pretty. When you run the app for the first time, you will be prompted with 2 options: add a database or choose an existing one. If you pick the latter, you can use a database that is hosted on cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud Drive, One Drive, Box, NextCloud, or using WebDAV or SFTP.

Database, password generator and more

You will need to install the corresponding cloud service's app on your iOS device for the option to show up in KeePassium. The advantage here is that KeePassium doesn't need to be connected to the service as it can load the KeePass database from the Dropbox folder on the device.

That's quite fantastic as it removes authentication worries from the entire process. Though KeePassium only saves a database that it creates in the KDBX4 format, it can also open/save KDBX3 and KDB formats. Of course, you can use the app to change the master password too.

KeePassium database

Once you add a database, it shows up on the side-bar. Tapping a folder displays all the logins inside it and selecting a login will show the username, password (hidden) and URL on the right pane. You can also attach files and notes to a password entry.

It also hides the actual number of characters in a password so that the information is hidden and is not revealed to others who catch a glimpse of the screen.

KeePassium password entry

You can sort the side-panel by tapping the icon on the bottom left. The search bar on the top of the pane lets you find entries quickly. There is a backup database option which will save an extra copy of the database on your device.

KeePassium sorting

The password generator can be accessed by tapping the + icon on the left panel and selecting "Create Entry". This is also how you add new logins to the database if you create new accounts.

KeePassium can generate random passwords using the following parameters: password length, lower case, upper case, special symbols, digits, and look-alike characters (like 1Il). The autofill option works fine and can be used in Safari or other browsers to securely login to your accounts.

Security

KeePassium is open source and free, though it does have a premium version with some extra features.? The app supports ChaCha20 and AES (like KeePass does) and also supports Argon2, Salsa20, and Twofish algorithms for encryption.

KeePassium free vs premium

When you switch to another app, Keepassium locks the database as it should. Though I did find it annoying when I was testing it by switching to and from Safari to test the manual copy to clipboard and search options. Maybe keeping the database open for 10 seconds or something could help prevent this, an option to enable this would be sufficient.

The App Lock adds an extra layer of security to KeepPassium. When enabled, you will need to enter your device's passcode just to access the app. You will still need to enter your master password to open the database which makes it time-consuming but provides better security.

KeePassium app lock

The "Unlock with master key" option is disabled by default and for good reason. When you enable it, Keepassium will remember the master key (master password) for the session so you don't have to enter the password every time you open the app. When you switch to another app and return you will find an "unlock" button (instead of a password field) on the app's home screen. The master key will be automatically cleared after the database has timed-out.

KeePassium unlock with master key KeePassium unlock with master key 1

I personally don't like such options, because if you forget to clear the master key and hand over your iPhone or iPad to someone, or it gets stolen or taken away, the database and all the passwords and information it contains can be accessed (unless you enable App lock).

The Database time-out is linked to the "unlock with master key" setting and Keepassium's default auto-clear time is 60 minutes. That's too much in my opinion but fortunately it can be customized and set to auto-lock from as low as 30 seconds and up to 24 hours or even never. Of course, you shouldn't keep the database open for that long. I'd say keep it to 30 seconds or a minute for maximum security.

You can optionally use a Key File to unlock the database. I get that some of these options may be convenient for some people, but it really should be security over convenience any day.

KeePassium settings

Closing Words

The promise of open source, free, no ads, no analytics, and no in-app browser in KeePassium does seem to be true. I'd say you're getting more than what you're paying for, even with the free version. That being said, I misunderstood the Touch ID/ Face ID unlock option in KeePassium. It doesn't unlock the database, it is one of the app lock options. You need to enable "remember? master key", to get it to unlock the database. Well, maybe I'm expecting too much, but as a longtime user of Keepass2Android, it is one feature which I really like.

I think both apps, Strongbox and Keepassium are equally good. This really is a try it yourself and decide kind of situation.

Windows 10 may display a "Get even more out of Windows" prompt occasionally that displays additional services that users may set up. The prompt may be displayed on the first start of the device, after the installation of a feature update, or at random provided that it has not been turned off.

Microsoft launched the post-upgrade setup experience in May 2018 in Insider Preview build 17682 and we looked at the feature in January 2019 when it became clear that Windows 10 version 1903 would include it. The screen looked a bit different back then but the listed services have not changed since then.

get even more out of windows

The Get even more out of Windows prompt highlights a number of services that are powered by a Microsoft Account:

  • Set up Windows Hello -- Sign in faster and more securely.
  • Link your phone and PC -- Help your devices work in harmony.
  • Do more across devices -- Enjoy more seamless experiences.
  • Get Office 365 ready -- Have your apps ready for launch.
  • Protect your files with OneDrive -- Keep them backed up and accessible.

Some Windows 10 users may find the prompt useful as it allows them to set up some of these services directly. It is possible to set these up elsewhere on the system which means that the prompt's main purpose is to get more users to discover these options and use them.

It is a good idea to disable the prompt if you don't want to use any of the features or set up some of them already. The prompt may be superfluous in this case and is best disabled to speed things up.

Disabling the experience

Windows administrators and users have two options to disable the prompt on machines running Windows 10. The first option disables it in the Settings application, the second option using the Registry.

Settings app

windows 10 disable suggestions get more

This option is the safer option as it does not require manipulating the Registry. Here is what you need to to:

  1. Open the Settings application, e.g. from Start or by using the keyboard shortcut Windows-I.
  2. Go to System > Notifications & actions in the Settings application.
  3. Locate "Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows" under Notifications on the page that opens.
  4. Uncheck the box to disable the "Get more" prompt".
  5. Close the Settings application.

The Registry

You may also change a value in the Windows Registry to block the prompt on the device. We have prepared to Registry files that you can download to disable or enable the feature. You may also make the change manually if you prefer to do so.

To download the archive with the two Registry files, click on the following link: Registry file

All modern web browsers support the HTML5 Geolocation API that allows sites, with the permission of the user, to get the geographical position.

The feature is used by numerous services on the Internet including mapping services that use it to quickly find out about a user's location, services that provide regional versions of their sites, or services that provide suggestions that it bases on a user's geographical region.

Most browsers (all?) don't indicate when a site uses the geolocation API. While it may be obvious at times, e.g. when you allow location access and a maps service focuses the map on that location, you may not know about it when it is not clear immediately.

While you could and should assume that a site uses location information once you give it permission to use the API, you may want to know when and if it uses it.

firefox geolocation last access

Firefox 70 includes an indicator that reveals when a site accessed the location for the last time. A click on the shield icon in the Firefox address bar displays the permissions that you gave the site in question. If you gave it permission to access location data, you will see the last access listed there underneath the permission.

The bug listing on Mozilla's bug tracking website dates back nine years. Mozilla wanted to better visualize the use of location by sites in Firefox to indicate the use of the API permanently for as long as the permission was granted.

Firefox 70 displays an icon in its address bar to indicate use of the location API; previous versions of the web browser display no icon which means that users don't see directly whether they have given a site (temporary) location access.

It is a small change but it improves visibility of the permission significantly in the web browser.

Firefox 70 is scheduled for a release on October 23, 2019 if the schedule is not changed. The next stable version of the Firefox web browser is Firefox 69 which is scheduled to be released on September 3, 2019.

Firefox users can disable the geolocation feature entirely in the web browser.

If you have used Windows System Restore, you may know that it isn't always reliable. To make matters worse, it may not even be enabled on some machines by default.

RollBack Rx is a free to use Windows Time Machine software which is in many regards better in my opinion. The program is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows from Windows XP on including Windows 10.

Please note that there is a Home and a Professional version of RollBack Rx. The home version has some limitations, e.g. it limits the total number of snapshots and does not support advanced features such as remote management or multi-drive support. It is completely free on the other hand.

The interface

RollBack Rx is a free Windows Time Machine software that's better than System Restore

RollBack Rx has a very straight-forward GUI. The side-panel has 5 tabs, and the right-pane displays the options for the currently selected tab.

The Home tab shows a pie-chart of your hard drive's space (used/free), and also displays information regarding the last snapshot/restore. You will also find 2 options here:

  • Rollback computer - This is the life saver. Use this option to revert to a previously taken snapshot. All it takes is a reboot. You will have an option to create a new snapshot should you wish to return to the current state.
  • New Snapshot - As the name suggests, you can use it to create a new snapshot preserving the current state of your OS.

Note: The program creates a baseline snapshot which is quite large. This is the primary snapshot, and all future ones created depend on it and use less space because of that. You can delete the baseline snapshot, but the program will create a new one, the next time you take a snapshot. You don't need to mess with it.

Instant restore has options to Rollback computer (same as above), Recover Files from snapshots, and Explore Snapshot. The last option opens the snapshot as a virtual disk (displayed as a removable drive). You can use it to recover any data that was saved in the snapshot.

RollBack Rx virtual drive RollBack Rx restore 1 RollBack Rx restore

The Snapshots tab lists all available restore points which were created by RollBack Rx, and lets you manage them. The Event Logs tab is a troubleshooting tool which stores information about events and issues.

The Sub-console

This is the recovery environment which is available to boot just before Windows starts. You can enter the console using the Home key during boot. It has options to Rollback the computer, take a new snapshot, uninstall the program, access some built-in tools and exit the recovery. It's very user-friendly, and you will get used to it in no time.

You can see from the following screenshot that I restored the computer twice today. I did so once using the Sub-console and once using the Windows program's interface. I tested them to ensure everything works, and it's just fine.

RollBack Rx event logs

How does it work?

The concept is quite simple. RollBack Rx captures a snapshot of the current state of Windows to be used as a backup. It can be useful when your computer crashes, is throwing out BSODs, fails to boot, or even gets infected by malware. You could even use it to take a snapshot before trying a new program, and in case of issues, just rollback to the previous state.

Does this mean my computer will not save files after a reboot? No, that only happens if you manually revert to a previous snapshot from RollBack Rx's interface. When you reboot the computer normally, it works just like it should with all your data intact.

My personal experience

RollBack Rx has been very reliable for me. When I ran into issues/crashes, all I had to do was revert to an older snapshot. The most notable of this was when I installed iTunes on my PC a few days after getting an iPad. Maybe it was a buggy version or something which caused my computer to crash, but I was able to restore it to a previous state.

However, I did face a problem with RollBack once. A few years ago, I was trying to update to a new major version of Windows 10 and it always failed. Searching for a fix returned no results (at that time). Though the update process was failing, I wasn't worried since I had a previous snapshot to revert to. Thank goodness I had RollBack Rx, right? Here's the funny part.

I eventually realized the issue could be related to RollBack Rx. Maybe it was the recovery console preventing the OS from writing the data to the C: drive?. This had never happened before, as I had always been able to update Windows. But when I uninstalled the application, I was able to update Windows as usual. I reinstalled it later, and everything was fine. This happened a long time ago, perhaps in 2016.

Fast-forward to 2019, and the issue has an official fix. Click on the tools menu in RollBack's GUI, select Advanced Settings and enable the option which says "Allow install of Windows Updates that cannot be rolled back".

Note: RollBack Rx disables System Restore when you install it, but you can manually enable it. You should do this right away.

Closing Words

RollBack Rx is a handy program for Windows to create snapshots of the system partition so that you may restore the snapshot at a later point in time. It works similarly to using programs to backup the system partition but integrates itself nicely in Windows.

While I recommend using RollBack Rx, I would also like to remind you to get into the habit of backing up your data using Windows Backup (or another backup software for Windows such as Acronis or Macrium Reflect or something else) from time to time. There is no harm in having a backup of a backup.

A new version of the open source Office suite LibreOffice, LibreOffice 6.3, is now available. The new version can be downloaded for all supported operating systems from the official project website or by using built-in updating functionality.

The development team released the last major update in February 2019. LibreOffice 6.2 introduced an optional tabbed ribbon-like interface at the time.

The new version features performance improvements, a new document redaction option, Twain support in the 64-bit version on Windows, and improved compatibility with certain Microsoft Office document formats.

LibreOffice 6.3 introduces several major changes and improvements. One of the notable changes improves the program's loading and saving performance. The two core programs Writer (Word) and Calc (Excel) load and save some documents significantly faster in the release.

libreoffice 6.3 update

Writer loads certain ODT files, e.g. those with lots of bookmarks, as well as documents with large tables or embedded fonts significantly faster. Calc's loading performance of XLSX and ODS files, saving of XLS spreadsheets, and loading and rendering of files with VLOOKUP was improved considerably as well.

The new release features additional improvements. Copying of filter cells from Calc to Writer copies and pastes only the filtered cells into a table in Writer. Version 6.2 of LibreOffice pasted all cells, and pre-6.2 versions did not display a proper table in the document.

Other Writer improvements include that page backgrounds -- color, gradient and tiled bitmaps -- cover the entire page, new bottom-to-top and left-to-right writing directions in table cells and text frames,? support for the importing of charts from Docs drawingML group shapes, and support for Word form controls as of this release.

The latter needs to be enabled under Tools > Options > Writer > Compatibility > Reorganize Forms menu to have it MS compatible.

The spreadsheet application Cacl features reworked sampling options and support for new spreadsheet FOURIER() functions.

Here is a quick overview of other improvements and changes:

  • Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw have full Tabbed Compact UI versions. Select using View > User Interface.
  • Multiple Impress animations may now be reordered using drag and drop.
  • Fixes for OOXML preset shapes.
  • Import of SmartArt from PPTX files improved.
  • Firebird Migration Assistant is now enabled by default in Base.
  • Math introduces support for harpoon and wideharpoon attributes.
  • TWAIN module is now available as a standalone 32-bit shim executable (twain32shim.exe) so that 64-bit versions of LibreOffice for windows may use scanner.
  • Option to adjust the number of saved searches in Find & Replace under Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Advanced
  • Tip of the Day shows a tip a day on start. Can be disabled.
  • Release notes link displayed in the application after updates.
  • Option to react documents. To use it, select Tools > Redact from the menu.

libreoffice redaction

Redacted documents can be exported as PDF or ODG documents.

The full release notes of LibreOffice 6.3 are available on the Document Foundation Wiki website.

Closing Words

LibreOffice 6.3 is a big release that introduces several improvements and new features to the Office suite.? Better loading and saving performance, the redaction tool, and other changes need to be mentioned specifically in this regard.

Now You: which Office suite, if any, do you use?

The game distribution service GOG flies a bit under the radar in the grand scheme of things. It is not the largest nor the store with the biggest selection of games. GOG is different in several key aspects, however, and that makes it an interesting choice for some users.

GOG offers DRM free games and content, has a strong focus on classic games, and does not require the installation of a gaming client.

The company launched GOG Galaxy, its gaming client, in 2018 as an optional component. Customers could, but did not have to, download GOG Galaxy to better manage games, game updates, and use functionality that GOG added to the client regularly.

A major update, GOG Galaxy 2.0, was teased in May 2019 and customers could sign-up for a place in the beta of the client. One of the revealed features made version 2.0 of the client a very interesting update, one that could very well boost the popularity of the client significantly. GOG highlighted that Galaxy 2.0 would function as a multi-platform client so that customers could manage all their games using it.

One of the main issues today on PC is that several gaming companies and publishers created platforms to sell games. Steam may be the largest on PC but there are also stores by EA, Ubisoft, Epic, and Microsoft, to name just a few of the larger players.

gog galaxy 2.0

I received my invite to the closed beta recently and spend some time using the client.? The client picks up data from an existing GOG Galaxy installation and can be installed on Windows 8 or newer versions of Windows. The current client, GOG Galaxy 1.2, supports Windows 7 as well. The new client is also available for Mac OS X 10.12 or newer.

Note: the client is still in beta. Some features may not work properly yet and bug are to be expected. I did not experience many though during my initial test of the platform update.

GOG Galaxy 2.0 should pick up all games purchased on GOG automatically after you sign-in to the client. You can manage these just like before and browse the library, install or uninstall games, and start to play them.

The major new feature of the new version is the ability to connect to other platforms. A click on "add games & friends" and the selection of "connect platforms" begins the process.

The current version of the client supports the following platforms besides GOG.com: Xbox Live, Epic Games Store, Origin, Playstation Network, Steam, Uplay.

gog integrations

All you need to do at this point is to click on the "connect" button next to the platform that you want to integrate. GOG Galaxy 2.0 downloads a component that is required for the integration and displays the supported features in a prompt.

To use Steam as an example. Steam users get to integrate the game library in the GOG Galaxy 2.0 client, may install and launch games from the platform, and get to use achievement and game time features.

The friends functionality is limited as only recommendations by friends are provided but not the list of friends or chat functionality.

connect steam

Once you hit connect you get a new login prompt for the service to authenticate. All games of the library are imported then and any game that is already installed on the system will be recognized as such. GOG plans to integrate single game imports in a future version.

Galaxy 2.0 divides games by client and provides a full listing of all games next to that. You may use filters, e.g. by platform or system, to limit results.

If installations are supported, you may install any game directly from the Galaxy 2.0 client if you want to. You may also install using the native client and GOG Galaxy 2.0 will pick up the installation automatically.

Note that installations and playing of third-party platform games requires the installation of these platforms on the device. You still end up having to install them all if the platforms require that but can manage all games from a single client.

Closing Words

GOG Galaxy 2.0 left a great impression. While still in beta, it worked well and for the most part as expected. The idea to create a client to manage games on multiple platforms is great as it improves manageability significantly.

If GOG manages to integrate friends and chats for all these platforms as well, or at least notifications when friends start to play certain games, it could very well turn out to become my main gaming client on Windows.

Now You: What is your take on the idea and client? Do you play games?

Pingo is a free software program for Microsoft Windows and Linux devices to optimize images for web publication and other purposes.

Pingo is a command line utility but Windows users may download the graphical user interface version called Pinga instead.

The application is provided as a 64-bit program only. Compatibility information is not provided but it should run on any recent version of Windows and on most Linux systems.

The following review looks at the GUI version of the image optimizer for the most part. Note that the command line version is included when you install the GUI version. You can check out an overview of important commands here.

The GUI version

pinga pingo optimize images web

The program supports only a handful of formats at the time of writing. While it does support PNG and JPG, arguably the formats most commonly used on the Web, it lacks support for most image formats; this limits the program's use especially when you compare it to a program like File Optimizer which supports pretty much any format under the sun.

Still, if you work with jpg, png,, webp, and apng formats exclusively, you may find it useful nevertheless as it offers several interesting options.

You can drag and drop images to the interface to add them to the processing queue. Any format that is not supported is ignored automatically. Each image is listed with its full path and size in the interface.

All processing options are displayed at the top. The main features of the image optimizer are:

  • To strip PNG and JPG metadata.
  • To select a default quality level.
  • To select resize, rotate, colors, and enhance options for JPG images.
  • To set the compression type, e.g. lossy or lossless.
  • Image transformations, e.g. to make the images grayscale or disable transparency.

Once you are done select optimize to process all images in the queue. Processing is quite fast and you will notice that the new file size and the size reduction in percentage is displayed.

The program features no preview option or test run option unfortunately. Programs like ImBatch provide preview options which improves the entire process especially since you get previews without having to process the files first.

Another thing that users need to be aware of is that it processes files directly. Means, files are overwritten so that you should use the program to work on copies only to avoid any resulting issues.

Closing Words

Pingo/Pinga is still in early development and things may improve in the future. It is quite limited in the current version and the lack of previews makes it quite difficult to work with.

Whether you have just finished installing Windows 10 on a computer or updated to Windows 10 for the first time, there are a few things that you may want to do; this isn't a list of essential software or tweaks but essentials that Windows admins and users should consider. Tech savvy users may well be aware of them.

These aren't mandatory, but more of a precautionary measure and include backing up the system, installing updates, making sure proper drivers are installed so that all hardware is recognized and working to its fullest potential, and more.

Basic things to do after a clean install of Windows 10

Basic things to do after a clean install of Windows 10

Install all Updates

This is literally the first thing you should do in my opinion. Some may prefer to create a backup of the system first, and that is a good strategy as well as it provides restoration options if updates misfire.

Note: The guide is for most systems. Some Windows 10 users prefer to keep in control over the updating and that is fine as well. You may use third-party tools to install updates selectively only.

clean install of Windows 10

Check for updates and install all available ones. You should disable the Delivery Optimization option (download updates from other computers) from the Advanced options under Windows Updates. I would advise activating Windows immediately as well there's no point in waiting to do that. The operating system may be activated already under certain circumstances.

Check your hardware

Windows comes with a lot of drivers pre-loaded, so your computer should be working fine. But in case it isn't, you can install drivers manually. e.g. If your GPU isn't working right or if? a device is not recognized at all or functioning properly.

Tip: If you have a graphics card, you're better off downloading the driver from the official website. I have had my fair share of buggy Nvidia updates, which I had to resolve using Display Driver Uninstaller.

A good way to check if all things are working would be to play a video. Optionally, you can run Microsoft Edge (install Ublock Origin) and stream a YouTube video. This should help you test whether your internet, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and graphics card are functioning, all at once. Plug in a USB drive to see if the ports are working too. Don't forget to test other components like a Wi-Fi adapter and Bluetooth if you have those.

Backup the OS

This is the most important step, after a clean install of Windows. Some may argue that this is even the first thing that you should do. But I prefer installing updates on the computer, and then imaging the drive.

You can use Windows' built-in Backup & Restore tool, or use a third-party program like Macrium Reflect Free to backup your computer's C: Drive. Save the backup image on a different drive, like a portable or external HDD. I cannot stress this enough, if you save it on the same drive on your computer, you may not be able to access it if the drive/OS fails.

Tip: Don't forget to create a Recovery Media (USB Flash Drive) after backing up the OS. Also,? delete the browser data completely after downloading the backup application.

Things not to do before backing up the OS

Do not install any software just yet

Apart from your drive imaging program, you should not install any third-party software on a clean install of Windows before you have backed up the OS. Even the installation of antivirus can wait if you plan to switch from Windows Defender to another security solution.

Why is this so important?

The backup is a fallback option should problems arise. Let's say you install some software or driver and your PC crashes. BSODs, freezes, or something else. And if your hard drive crashes? Do you want to spend time re-installing the OS and all those updates again with multiple reboots along the way? What if a malware infects your computer? You could disinfect the PC or even format the entire drive.

Re-installing Windows is a chore that has ruined many a weekend for me. But you can save time if you have a backup of the OS, especially if it is of a clean Windows 10 installation. You get to start from scratch, without spending hours fixing the issues.

You may also create regular backups of the system, with software installed, to go back to that state and not the initial clean after-installation state of the operating system.

What are the cons of this process?

The only real con is that the backup will age rather quickly. Microsoft releases updates for Windows on a regular basis, surely you know what Patch Tuesday is. So, your backup will be missing these updates should you restore it, say after a few months. But since the updates are cumulative even a slightly older backup can still be a good option.

Get into the habit of backing up your OS from time to time. And don't forget to take a new backup before Microsoft releases a major OS update (officially called feature update), the most of recent of which is Windows 10 version 1903.

Other things to consider

May I take this as an opportunity to remind you that Windows 7 reaches end of support in January 2020.

Now you: what are the first things you do after a clean install of Windows 10.

Windows 10's photos app is horrible and slow but it is the default application to display images on the operating system. You can bring back Windows Photo Viewer optionally if you are used to the classic image viewer and prefer it.

There are other good options and many Windows users install third-party alternatives such as IrfanView, nomacs, Faststone Image Viewer, XnView, or QuickViewer and use them to view images and photos on the system.

ImageGlass

ImageGlass is free image viewer for Windows

ImageGlass is a free image viewer for Windows which supports about 72 formats including PSD (Photoshop) and RAW formats. The program is open source and is available as a portable version and installer. It's fast and relatively light on resources but not the fastest or lightest third-party image viewer that is available for Windows 10.

The thing I like the most about the application is the tool bar as it features lots of useful options that are all accessible with just a click. The icons for the options are flat and quite nice as well. You can use the toolbar to navigate from one picture to another, rotate or flip images, scale or zoom the view among other things.

The most important options on ImageGlass' toolbar are the ones at the end of the toolbar. The thumbnail view can be used to bring up a thumbnail preview gallery of all the pictures which are in the same folder which is very useful to search pictures just by glancing at them. The checkerboard background gives the interface a nice photo editor-like look. The other options are to view the image in full-screen, play as a slideshow and delete picture.

The title bar is also very useful, it not only displays the name of the picture, but also its file path, resolution or disk size. ImageGlass comes with two themes: dark and light gray but there are more themes available for the program on the official website.

Keyboard shortcuts are supported as well. You can use the arrow keys to navigate between images, use shortcuts to save images, start a slideshow, or to zoom to name just a few options. One handy shortcut is Ctrl-Shift-L as it opens the image's location on the system.

Advanced features

imageglass settings

ImageGlass can save pictures in different formats (BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, ICO, JPG, PNG, TIFF, WMV, BaseString) which means that you may use it to convert images to one of the supported formats. There is a color-picker (eye-dropper tool) that supports RGBA, HEXA, HSLA which can be of use to artists and designers. The mouse wheel can be used for scrolling and zooming, and you can customize the actions from the settings even further.

You can copy an image to the clipboard, switch to ImageGlass and use the "Open image data from clipboard" to directly open it in the viewer. ImageGlass supports animated GIFs as well, and you can use the program to pause the animation or even save a particular frame from the clip, you can even define the zoom levels.? The program can be used to view the different color channels in an image such as Red, Blue. Green, Black and Alpha. Try it and save the result for a really cool looking picture.

The only thing ImageGlass cannot be used for is to edit images. But you can set the default image editor for each format in the program's settings to open it directly from the viewer.

Closing Words

ImageGlass is user friendly, fast and to the point. It is not as feature-rich as some of the other programs, and it is not the fastest or most resource friendly either, but it is not doing too bad either. If you have yet to pick an image viewer for a Windows 10 device, you may want to give it a try.

More and more users of Google Images, the image search engine operated by Google, are switched over to a new display format and design.

Google Images is a popular search engine to find photos and other imagery. The company changed Google Images significantly several times in recent time. It removed the View Image button in 2018 and revealed in 2019 that it would introduce what it called shoppable ads to the image search service.

Chrome and Firefox users could install View Image extensions to bring back the functionality or switch to a search engine like Startpage that still featured the functionality.

While it is almost certain that browser extensions or scripts will become available to restore the old Google Images layout, none seem to be available at the time of writing.

The core change moves the preview of the selected image search result from a centered preview area to the right side.

google images right side preview

The image preview size remains the size for the majority of images and it is possible to browse other images returned as results while the preview window is open. Users may also notice that the preview area is fixed which means that less "jumping" takes place when new results are selected from the list of search results.

One point of criticism is that the new layout limits the size of the preview. While that is not a problem for small images, it is one for larger images, e.g. 1080p images or 4K photos. The preview area has a fixed size and while it changes based on the size of the browser window, it is not possible to change the search results to preview area ratio on Google Images.

Related images displayed underneath the preview are larger than before, but fewer are displayed next to each other on the screen.

Closing Words

I don't use Google Images anymore as I prefer the image search of the Startpage search engine and Bing search engine. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of Bing's preview feature as it displays the selected image in an overlay. I do like Bing's video search functionality better than that of YouTube, but that is another story entirely.

Work on the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser continues and Microsoft adds new features to preview versions of the browser on a weekly basis. The latest build introduces Caret Browsing, an accessibility feature, in the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser.

The feature is hidden behind an experimental flag currently and the functionality is only available in the Canary version of Microsoft Edge. It will take some time before it reaches other beta channels of the browser; a stable version of the browser is not yet available.

Caret Browsing enables navigation on the webpage and text selection with the keyboard on webpages in Microsoft Edge when enabled.

Caret Browsing is a native feature of Internet Explorer, the classic Microsoft Edge web browser, and the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Users of these browsers tap on F7 on the keyboard to enable Caret Browsing in the web browser.

Chromium users may download the Google Caret Browsing extension from the Chrome Web Store to integrate the functionality in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers such as Vivaldi, Opera, or Brave.

Microsoft identified several issues that drove the company's decision to integrate Caret Browsing natively in the Edge browser. Most notable, users had to search and install the extension to use it, and issues such as problems with certain Enterprise policies that were caused by delivering the feature as an extension.

microsoft edge caret browsing

Here is what you need to do currently to enable the feature in Microsoft Edge:

  1. Load edge://flags/#edge-caret-browsing in the browser's address bar.
  2. Set the status of the feature to Enabled.
  3. Restart Microsoft Edge.

Setting the flag to Enabled turns Caret Browsing on in Microsoft Edge. You need to enable the feature manually, however, in each session to make use of it. The description of the flag does not reveal information on how to enable it.

All you have to do is press F7 on the keyboard to enable Caret browsing in Edge. Edge displays a "turn on caret browsing" prompt by default. Select "turn on" to enable it. You may check the "Don't ask me again when I press F7" box to disable the prompt in future sessions and enable Caret browsing just by tapping on the F7 key.

Once you have enabled the feature you may use the up-down-left-right keys on the keyboard to navigate the webpage.? Interaction with elements on the webpage is also possible; hit the Enter-key to load the target of links, or hold down the Shift-key and use the cursor keys to select text which you may copy using Ctrl-C.

Closing Words

Caret Browsing is an experimental feature at the time of writing and that explains why it needs to be enabled manually using a flag before it becomes available. Microsoft will integrate the feature natively eventually so that it does not need to be enabled using the flag.

Caret Browsing is another feature that distinguishes the Chromium-based Edge from Google Chrome.

Site Compatibility Tools is a new extension for the Firefox web browser designed to find and report site compatibility issues experienced in Firefox.

If you take Internet Explorer and the old Microsoft Edge out of the picture, as they are not the focus of development anymore, you are left with Firefox and Safari when it comes to browsers with a sizeable user base that are not based on Chromium.

With Chrome's huge market share on the desktop, it is becoming a trend seemingly that certain websites or services don't work well in Firefox or not at all. Google plays a role here certainly, as it is not uncommon to find the company block browsers from accessing updated products or services, or even new ones, at least for a period of time.

A few examples: the new Google Earth release of 2017 was Chrome exclusive, the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge was blocked from accessing the new YouTube, or accusations that Google made YouTube slower for other browsers deliberately.

Mozilla is very aware of the implications; the organization launched several projects and initiatives to tackle the issue from different angles. It launched a Web Compatibility page in Firefox recently that lists changes that Firefox makes to certain sites to get them to display and work properly in the browser.

Site Compatibility Tools

firefox site compatibility tools

Site Compatibility Tools is another tool that has just been released. Web developers are the main audience but anyone may download and install the extension.

The first version of the extension supports reporting functionality and provides site compatibility news for Firefox versions. Mozilla plans to extend that in the future by integrating a site compatibility checker in the extension. Once launched, it would give webmasters and developers a tool at hand to test websites for compatibility issues directly in Firefox.

The extension is compatible with all recent versions of the Firefox web browser. Launch the Developer Tools after installation and switch to the Compatibility tab to display its set of tools.

It starts with a list of site compatibility changes in different Firefox versions. The links point to Mozilla's Firefox Compatibility Site and provide further information on the change.

The only other feature that is available in the initial release version is the reporter. It displays options to report problems with sites to Mozilla via Twitter (openly or via direct message), GitHub, or by using email. It is a rudimentary feature at the time of writing.

Firefox users may report issues to Mozilla using the Web Compatibility reporter as well. It is linked in Nightly but can be accessed directly as well.

Closing Words

The initial version of the Site Compatibility Tools extension has limited uses; this will change when compatibility checking is integrated into the extension as it may help developers find issues on webpages and sites in an automated process.

Now You: What is your expectation in this regard? Can Mozilla keep up with compatibility issues?

Subtitles can be invaluable when you watch movies, especially if they have some commentary or if the video is in a foreign language that you don't understand. Do you know how to create or convert subtitles?

If subtitles are provided in the right format and language, then there is nothing that you need to do as you can play them just fine in the media player or on a device. Some subtitles may be in the wrong format or language, or you may want to create a subtitle from scratch for your favorite TV show or movie.

Tip: check out the following subtitle resources and tools that we reviewed previously here on Ghacks:

Subtitle Edit

subtitle edit
subtitle was downloaded for demo purposes only.

An easy way to do it, is by using Subtitle Edit. It is an open source subtitle editor and converter which is available for Windows. I wouldn't call it user-friendly, but it's not too difficult to learn either. The program supports over 200 subtitle formats that it may load and plenty of output formats.

One of the great features of the application is that it can play videos and subtitles simultaneously so that you can verify the timing, text position, and other parameters quite easily once you get the hang.

Subtitle Edit has a 4-pane UI with quite a few interface elements including several tabs. Core elements include:

  • A List View/Source View - Displays the subtitle content with time stamps. You can edit the text content here directly, as well as set the start and end time for each line.
  • A Video preview pane - Plays the video and displays the subtitle. You can use it to check if the text is in sync with the video.
  • Translate - You can enter a word or phrase in the text field, and click on Google it to search for the phrase. The Google Translate option takes you to directly to the website, with the phrase pre-loaded for translation. The Free Dictionary and Wikipedia options tell you more about the word you searched for.
  • Create - Lets you add a new subtitle at a specific time position, and also lets you define the start and end time for the text to appear in the video position.
  • Adjust lets you sync the subtitle using time based controls.
  • A Waveform - Displays a visual representation of the audio source, which can be useful (for e.g. to skip silent scenes while editing/syncing a subtitle.)

The toolbar in Subtitle Edit's interface can be used to open/create/save your subtitle, find or find & replace text in a subtitle. There are options to enable visual synchronization, Google translate and spell checking, and to search for text online.. The toggles for the waveform and video player can be used to hide the respective panes from view. You can see the format of the loaded subtitle and the encoding it uses, right next to the toolbar.

This is all you need to know about the program. There are a lot more options available through the file menu, but most of those are self-explanatory.

How to convert subtitles to SRT

In this example we are going to use VTT but you can load pretty much any subtitle either by dragging and dropping it or by using load options.

What is a VTT subtitle?

VTT is the extension used by the WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks) format. It is used to display closed captions in streaming videos and is used by many services including YouTube. You may know what SRT subtitles are as they are quite common; well, a VTT is based on SRT but has some extra options.

One very important feature that is slightly hidden in Subtitle Edit is the subtitle converter. It can be accessed from 2 places: the easiest way is to use the "Save As" option from the File menu. The other way is to access the "Batch Convert" option from the Tools menu.

Run Subtitle Edit and open the VTT (or any other subtitle format) and click save as and choose SRT. For Batch convert, simply select a folder which has the subtitles in it (sub-folders will be searched as well).? The program uses the Subrip format (SRT) as the pre-selected option. All you have to do is click the convert button and the SRT files will be ready in a few seconds

One of my friends asked me for help with a video that came with a VTT subtitle, it wouldn't work with MPC-HC. I played the video in MPV and the subtitle worked just like that. MPC-BE worked fine as well. This was a training video made by his office for their intranet portal, so there wasn't any way to download a different subtitle. I didn't want to force my friend to switch video players. So, the only fix was to convert the subtitles from VTT to SRT. I used Subtitle Edit for this. The batch convert option was handy since there were a lot of files in the folders. The resultant subtitles worked perfectly with the videos and this is what inspired me to write this article.

Note: Subtitle Edit requires you to install LAV Filters (also open source). If you don't want to install it, you can select the option to use MPV or MPC-HC or VLC from the settings. You also need Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.0 or later to run the application. If you don't want to run software, you may also try the beta version of Subtitle Edit online which you can run in any modern browser.

TaskSchedulerView, a handy portable program for Windows devices to manage scheduled tasks, is one of our favorite Nirsoft applications.

The recent update to TaskSchedulerView 1.51 introduces yet another useful feature; the program displays whether tasks may wake the PC when they are scheduled to run.

TaskSchedulerView is a free portable program for Windows. It is compatible with all versions of Windows from Windows Vista to the latest version (Windows 10 at the time of writing) and is available as a 32-bit and 64-bit application.

All you need to do is download the 32-bit or 64-bit archive to your system and extract it. You can run it right from that location or any other.

Tip: check out our recent review of Nirsoft's Currports application.

TaskSchedulerView

taskschedulerview waketorun

All you need to do is run the program to get the entire list of tasks on the system. The application displays tasks names, status, last run date and time, and other information in the interface.

A click on any column sorts the task table accordingly; you can sort by last run date, task name, status (disabled or ready), or next run date and time.

Wake To Run is new in TaskSchedulerView 1.51. You find the column by scrolling to the right for a while. The new listing informs you if a task may wake the PC when it is scheduled to run. Just check the tasks with "Yes" to find out which tasks may wake the PC.

The information is useful if you notice that "something" wakes up your PC occasionally or even frequently. While you could go through the Task Scheduler manually to find the culprit, using TaskSchedulerView is much easier as you can sort by last run date and check the wake to run column to find the task that was responsible for the waking of the PC (if a task was the culprit). A right-click displays options to disable or enable tasks but some may be locked by Windows.

Closing Words

The update to TaskSchedulerView 1.51 introduced another useful feature that improves the usefulness of the software for Windows further. You may use it to analyze why a PC wakes up all of a sudden or at least make sure that a task was not responsible for the automatic waking up.

Manage Speculative Execution Settings Script is a batch file for Microsoft Windows devices to check and manage the Speculative Execution Protection status on the system.

Speculative Execution side-channel attacks are a new class of vulnerabilities that started to make waves in early 2018 when it was discovered that nearly any device was considered vulnerable.

Microsoft released a lot of patches to address certain variants, e.g. Spectre V4, or Spectre 1.1 and 1.2. Tools have been created to check a PC for patches and you may use Gibson's free InSpectre tool or scripts by Microsoft to find out if a PC is vulnerable.

Manage Speculative Execution Settings Script

You can download the latest version of the script from Majorgeeks; just extract it after the download to get started. You can open the batch file in a plain text editor to verify that it is safe. Note that you need to run the batch file with administrative privileges.

When you run it for the first time you need to allow it to download an additional control script from the Internet. The script is needed for functionality and you cannot do anything if you don't allow it.

A list of options is displayed after the download. The following options are provided:

  1. Check Speculative Execution Protection Status
  2. Enable Mitigations for Spectre Variant 2 and Meltdown.
  3. Disable Mitigations for Spectre Variant 2.
  4. AMD and ARM only: Enable Full Mitigation for Spectre variant 2.

A tap on 1 displays the current status of protections; it is a good idea to start here to find out which protections are already in place and which are not; this part seems to use Microsoft's script.

current protection status

You may use the script to enable or disable certain protections. Note that you may need a certain Windows patch level to protect against certain attack variants.

One of the downsides of using the script is that it does not highlight if certain protections are enabled or disabled in the main menu. You need to verify the status first before you make a decision.

Closing Words

The script is certainly an advanced tool that system administrators and tech savvy users may find useful in certain situations.

Now you: how do you handle protections and mitigations?

In my last article here on the site, I suggested that running system cleaners, tune-up tools, and other third-party tools for the purpose of speeding up your PC significantly is not advised. While there are certainly some tools that may address certain issues that you may experience, e.g. by running a tool like Throttlestop to prevent CPU throttling, or by removing unneeded programs from autostart or making sure that there is enough free disk space on the drive for the pagefile and caches.

If you want to go beyond that, you probably wonder how to speed up your computer?

How to speed up your computer the right way - get an SSD

Kingston A400 read/write speeds

There are a few different ways to do so. Let's get a few of the complex options out of the way, before I reveal the ideal option.

Overclocking

This isn't recommended for normal users as it is quite technical and because there is a chance that it may damage the computer's hardware or cause other issues such as crashes that may lead to even more issues, e.g. data loss.

It takes time to understand how the processor or video card work, and to find out whether overclocking is even worthwhile. Generally speaking: if you have an AMD Ryzen processor you can overclock it, but if you have an Intel processor it's slightly complicated.

Basically, you will require a K-CPU to overclock, i.e. an i5-7500 cannot be overclocked, but an i5-7500K can be. Find out what you have, do some research about the pros and cons to understand the process and if it's actually worth it. You can overclock Graphics cards more easily. The performance increase that you may get from overclocking may not be huge and you may reduce the lifetime of the component and increase power consumption and heat generation at the same time.

Linux

Many people rely on Windows programs for their school/business work and Linux may not be an ideal solution for those. It requires that you install a different operating system on the device and get to learn it. Linux has come a long way from the "installation requires a computer science degree" to how things are today; distributions like Linux Mint, Manjaro, or even Ubuntu offer experiences that are very similar to what you get on Windows.

If you are a home user willing to shift to Linux, you may find that it is lighter on resources and that may lead to better performance when you use the computer. Obviously, you may not be able to run all programs or games on Linux that you ran on Windows, but there is Wine, and Steam maker Valve's continued effort to push Linux.

My advice: try a live USB to see if Linux is your cup of tea before installing it on your main drive. Note that performance is better if you run it from a hard drive and not a USB drive.

RAM

A lot of users assume that adding more RAM can help improve the overall performance of the computer. But I would say this is not true in all cases. While you will boost performance by adding more RAM to your system if you have less than 4 Gigabyte installed, you may not be able to see impressive gains after hitting that magic number.

You may need more RAM if you:

  • Play modern computer games.
  • Use the PC to edit videos.
  • Use the PC for audio editing.
  • Use the PC for photo editing.
  • Use real-time streaming applications.
  • Run virtual machines.
  • Use the PC as a development environment.

More RAM does not hurt performance on the other hand and you could use it for other purposes, e.g. the creation of? a virtual RAM disk to move certain caches or applications to the drive.

Tip: check out our overview of the best Ram Disk programs for Windows.

How to speed up your computer - get an SSD

A Solid State Drive is the best way to speed up a computer provided that you don't have one installed already that is not from one of those earlier generations of SSDs.

They are a lot faster than traditional mechanical hard drives and have higher life expectancy as well. The prices of SSDs have fallen considerably over the past year: you can get a great performing Solid State Drive with 120 Gigabytes of storage for about $40 and 240 Gigabyte drives are not that expensive anymore either.

Things you will need

For Desktops
  • An SSD drive, check out Anandtech's overview.
  • SATA Cable - You may have a spare in your Motherboard box or use the one from the old hard drive if you don't want to use it as well.
  • Power cable - Your PSU will have multiple SATA power cables (look for the thin and long flat one).
  • A Phillips head screw driver

Which SSD should I choose?

This is something that really depends on your budget and requirements. If you just want to speed up your PC just go with a 2.5-inch SSD made by Samsung or Crucial or any other company. Crucial is owned by Micron and makes the NAND storage chip in-house. The speeds of each drive differ so take that in your calculations as well.

If money isn't an issue and you have an M.2 slot on the motherboard, you should consider getting an M.2 drive. These are PCIe SSDs which look like a RAM module (thin, long, flat) which you connect to the m.2 slot and screw the other end in place. These have better read/write speeds than a standard SATA SSD, because they connect directly to a PCIe based slot without using cables. You may find that a 500GB SATA SSD is cheaper than a 250GB m.2 SSD. Basically regular SATA SSDs with more storage are more affordable.

If you want the best speeds though, look for an NVMe SSD. They are even more expensive, and connect via the M.2 connector. But since they use the NVMe protocol, they offer speeds which are higher than M.2 which uses SATA.

  • SATA SSD? - Costs less, can get more storage
  • m.2 SSD - Expensive but has better read/write speeds
  • NVMe- The most expensive option, also has the best read/write speeds

For Laptops

This isn't complicated but there are two ways to add a regular 2.5-inch SSD to a laptop provided that you can replace it and that you can open the laptop.

Does it have a drive bay on the back?

Check if your laptop has a drive bay on the back panel. It should be a small rectangular cut-out with a couple of screws. If so, you don't need anything else. Get an SSD and add it to the bay. Some laptops may even have an additional drive bay. You can replace the old HDD with the SSD, and use the older drive in the other slot. There are laptops which have just one drive bay in which case the SSD will replace the old HDD.

Tip: You can get a 3.5-inch HDD enclosure which is basically a SATA to USB casing, that allows you to use the old HDD as a portable drive.

Does it have an optical drive?

If your laptop doesn't have a drive bay but has a DVD drive you can use a caddy and replace the DVD drive with the hard drive. Make sure to choose the right sized caddy. Usually the optical drives have a sticker with their model number on it: search for the information on the sticker and you should get the dimensions, i.e., whether it is a 9.5mm or 12.7mm. You can also search for your laptop's model number + the words SSD caddy (for e.g. Dell Inspiron 5559 SS caddy), and you may run across posts/reviews from other users who upgraded similarly.

Tip: If you want an optical drive, you could consider buying an external DVD drive which connect via USB. It will not only allow you to use DVDs, but also serves as a portable drive which can work with other computers.

Personal experience

I have 2 SSDs (one which I have been using on my PC for a few years). The following is my experience from a few days ago.

I have a 5 year old laptop with basic specs. It is powered by a core-i3 5010 processor, an Intel HD5500 iGPU and 8GB of RAM. I can't believe I used to game on this laptop until I built my PC. I had played many games including GTA 5, Skyrim, Diablo 3, to name a few, on medium settings on this laptop. But it has aged rather badly, especially the HDD which according to CrystalDiskInfo, is failing.

Windows 7 took a few minutes to boot and programs opened with delay. I would have replaced the HDD myself if it was the kind which came with a drive bay on the back panel. This HP laptop opens from under the keyboard, I'd need to open it with a flat prying tool (or spudger) while not damaging the cables that are connected underneath.

But replacing an HDD with a HDD is not a good idea since it's not an upgrade at all. And since I had been using an SSD on my PC, I knew how to fix my laptop's woes. Fortunately, this laptop has an optical drive (DVD drive). So, I bought a 9.5mm caddy for about $10 and a 120GB SSD for $22, installed the drive in the caddy and replaced the optical drive. One screw was all it took for this. After a fresh install of Windows 10, the laptop boots in under 20 seconds (compared to the 3-4 minutes it used to). All programs launch instantly, and it's as if I bought a new computer.

Things to remember

You can clone the Windows installation on your HDD to your SSD using Macrium Reflect Free, Acronis or other backup tools, and have a fully working computer with all your settings and programs in less than 30 minutes. Many manufacturers of SSDs offer tools to copy the contents of a hard drive to the newly purchased SSD as well.

Don't forget to install the firmware updater for your SSD. It's a software from the manufacturer (Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive, Kingston SSD Manager, etc., ) which can also be used to check the SSD's health.

DO NOT defragment your SSD, as it serves no purpose. SSDs function differently, they're essentially a storage chip with a firmware which reads the data. HDDs on the other hand have a mechanical part to read/write data (like a pen and paper). Besides defrag programs write data on your SSD, which is something not recommended.

If you have an old laptop or desktop that you wish to keep around or use as a spare, get an SSD. You will literally feel the difference the second you start booting from the SSD, it will take seconds instead of minutes.

The developers of the open source Bittorrent client qBittorrent have released version 4.1.7 to the public on August 4, 2019. The new release is mostly a bugfix release but it introduces new features as well.

The program is a popular choice when it comes to the downloading and seeding of torrent files. It replaced uTorrent, a then-popular choice, when things started to get downhill for the project. The project included a Bitcoin Miner with the program in 2015 and promised soon thereafter that it would move away from the software bundling monetization model.

The maintainers of uTorrent launched uTorrent Web recently, a web-based version with basic functionality. Whether that was a long-overdue needed strategic change or the final nail in the coffin is still up for debate.

We suggested qBittorrent as a uTorrent alternative in 2012 and followed development of the application ever since here on Ghacks. The last major version of qBittorrent, qBittorrent 4.0 was released in 2017.

Tip: check out the following guides to make the most out of the program: qBittorrent Tips to improve the client, configure qBittorrent to block transfers when the VPN disconnects, understand the program's advanced save functionality, or search for torrents from within qBittorrent.

qbittorrent 4.1.7

The new qBittorrent 4.1.7 is already available; users should receive update notifications when they run the client -- provided that they have not disabled the functionality -- and it is also available on the official project website.

The new version is a bug fix release for the most part. It adds two new features: first 12 hour and 24 hour speed graphs, and second, a new horizontal layout for the add torrent dialog.

The new release fixed a crash bug next to that which affected program startup.

Other changes of interest include the saving of updated resume data for completed torrents, a new function to avoid race conditions when adding multiple torrents to the client, and a bug fix for torrent checking issues.

qBittorrent users who use the client's RSS functionality may notice some changes as well. The client performs more RSS parsing in the working thread, ignores RSS articles with non-unique identifiers, and downloads the RSS enclosure element if no promper MIME type is found.

The new version can be installed over the existing version. It is recommended to create a backup before the installer is run.

Every time someone asks me to fix a slow computer I almost certainly get a question about a program that I'd recommend to speed up the system.

I hate these kinds of questions because it more than likely involves a debate about the usefulness of such applications; I try to explain that I cannot recommend any as none will speed up the PC significantly but that is often met with refusal to believe that.

PSA Don't use system cleaners, they won't speed up your PC

Use Windows' built-in tools instead

Expectations are simple most of the time; download and install an application to magically speeds up the PC in one-click. The expectation is seemingly confirmed by sites on the Internet that claim that certain system speed up tools will magically speed up the PC significantly.

Tech-savvy users often refer to system speed-up programs and tune-up programs as snake oil. The programs may, at best, clean up some space on the device and remove some start-up programs to speed up system boot. At worst, use could lead to bigger issues as they may make changes to the Registry and core system files.

I won't lie to you: I have been using CCleaner for a decade until it was acquired by Avast in 2017. But that's on me, I use multiple browsers and I was lazy to open them and wipe the data on each browser, and CCleaner offered a fast way of doing that.

Why should you do it manually when a one-click option exists? Lesson learnt. I still see professional technicians recommend it to many users and I'd like to think they are doing so because it is the easier way. Instead of having to teach users how to manually maintain their systems, they simply point to a system cleaner or other speed-up programs, e.g. game boosters, and are done with the client.

I'm not saying that system cleaners are inherently bad by default; only that there is a discrepancy that needs to be addressed. There are certainly programs that are pure snake oil, maybe borderline deceptive.

Unethical marketing

System cleaners, system tuners, driver update programs, and what not. I'm tired of seeing this stuff everywhere. They also appear in Google Search results when you search for actual issues. Search for a particular error code, or some specific hardware issue. The majority of the results have the tags [Solved] or [Fix], or something similar. The corresponding articles are written by the companies, which own these snake oil products, or by companies that make money when users who want to fix issues that they experience from the companies that produce them.

That's right, they're using SEO and also paid advertising campaigns to reach large audiences. Don't get me wrong, some of these articles and the fixes they suggest are actually good and legit solutions. But they do keep recommending paid applications in the guides and usually near the top of the guide as one of the main solutions to address certain issues. Many of these guides appear to have been written solely for the reason of selling software.

I have even seen YouTube videos where a "demo" is showcased as well. People who watch it may get tricked and end up paying money to fix the issue. One of the main problems with these paid applications is that these don't fix the issues that users attempt to fix usually; many clear some data, fix unrelated and harmless Registry issues, or file associations. Most are not designed to fix "real" issues that users experience.

It gets worse. I spoke to someone who worked in affiliate marketing in their free time. I was shocked to learn that some top selling software (besides antivirus and VPNs apparently) is system cleaning programs. He had no idea why, even with no Pros/cons listed on the pages or even a review, the products just sell like hot cake. What I cannot understand is the fact people pay for these? as most moved from a pay-once model to a subscription system. Users may read something about "speeding up a PC" and buy a subscription hoping that the claims are true.

Expensive antivirus editions do that too

Some antivirus companies websites have products which are "recommended, best-sellers", generally the ones which are featured and are often the most expensive. Click on learn more or whatever option there is, and you will find that as part of their "Internet Security or Total Security or Premium or Premier or Ultimate edition/version, etc.", they offer additional features. These may include a password manager, software updater, system cleaner, game mode, browser cleanup. I'm not saying all of these are bad, but the majority of features that I tested were just bloatware and barely useful.

Here's how to analyze a PC (in my opinion, and no particular order)

1. Run a virus scan - Check if the computer has some malware or miner which is bogging down the system resources.

2. Check background tasks/services - Task Manager/Services.msc is fine for most, but advanced users may want to use Autoruns, Process Explorer, RAMMap and VMMap.

3. Windows Updates (includes driver updates but that is usually not recommended) - A buggy update which is slowing the PC could have a hot-fix which resolves the issue, so can a missing driver. Check if newer drivers are available and install those, but create a backup first.

4. Check HDD status (read/write errors, speeds) - Run disk check, or use CrystalDiskInfo/CrystalDiskMark, or something which can read S.M.A.R.T. data. I've even used the trial version of Hard Disk Sentinel, as a second opinion tool before replacing a failing HDD.

5. System File Checker - Windows' own troubleshooter/fixer can resolve the issue.

6. Uninstall unwanted/unused programs - Go through the list patiently and uninstall programs that you aren't using. Sometimes you may get bundleware/adware installed unintentionally when you are installing a different program.

7. Disk Cleanup (Disk cleanup/Storage Sense, free up some space on C:) - This is what you should be using anyway and is the safest tool to rely on. Don't forget to use the "Check System Files" option to clean up those large chunks of Windows Update downloads. You can also use Cleanmgr+ a third-party replacement for the deprecated Disk Cleanup tool.

All the above can be done for free. You only need a third-party software for Step 4 (optionally for step 1 and 2), but those are free anyway. In case of hardware issues, read Martin's troubleshooting guides. If none of those fixes your issues, take a complete backup of your data and reset/re-install Windows.

Here is a small selection of guides:

My advice

It's not in my place to tell anyone what to use but I feel obliged to advise users to stay away from stuff that does not help or can harm computers. My advice: stop paying for system tuning software as it is not worth it. Whatever speed difference you may experience is probably a placebo effect. .

If you are hell-bent on using a system cleaner, at least make sure you create a backup before using such a program. Use Windows' built-in option or Macrium Reflect Free to image your drive, and make sure that you save it on a different hard drive.

While you may be able to speed up your PC by freeing up space on the hard drive, disabling auto-start items, or uninstalling programs that run in the background, you may be able to speed it up significantly by upgrading hardware. Two of the top options are to replace a platter-based hard drive with a Solid State Drive, and to increase the available RAM. The options require little technical know-how; replacing the CPU and/or motherboard may work as well but it is more complicated.

Android devices operated in the European Union will soon display a selection of search engines to users. Three search engines, next to Google Search, which is the default on most Android devices, will be presented to the user of the device; third-party earch engines need to fill out an application form and may need to pay Google for the inclusion.

Google was ordered to pay a record fine of 4.3 Billion Euro because of anti-competitive practices surrounding the company's search engine Google Search and other Google applications on Android.

google-android search engine choice

The upcoming search engine selection screen displays three alternative search engines to Android users from the European Union. Most Android devices come with Google Search as the default search engine. Android users can install different search engines on their devices but 95% of all searches use Google Search as the search engine on Android according to the EU. The EU regulators believe that the dominance of Google Search can be attributed partially to Google making deals with manufacturers to make Google Search and apps the default on Android.

Google plans to display the choice screen during initial setup of the device. Users need to select one of the listed search engines during setup to proceed. The selected provider will be set as the search provider in the search box on the home screen, in Chrome as the default search engine, and the search app of the selected provider will be installed as well.

The effect of a user selecting a search provider from the choice screen will be to (i) set the search provider in a home screen search box to the selected provider, (ii) set the default search provider in Chrome (if installed) to the selected provider, and (iii) install the search app of the selected provider (if not already installed).

Google plans to start showing the choice screen in early 2020.

Search providers need to meet certain requirements to be eligible for inclusion. The requirements are listed on this support page on the Android website. Criteria include that a localized version is provided, that the search provider has a search app that is available on Google Play, that it is a general search provider and not a specialized one, and that the search provider provides Google will the necessary technical assets.

Google rolled out choice screens on Google Play in April 2019 to users from the European Union. The choice screens presented a list of additional search providers and mobile browsers to users. These were displayed without extra charge to search engine companies or browser makers.

Pay for inclusion

Search providers who want to be included need to fill out an application form and Google wants to auction off spots in the recommendations listing to the highest bidder for each country. Search providers need to set a price that they are willing to pay to Google each time a user selects their search engine from the choice screen. Google set a minimum price which it has not disclosed and will keep bids by search engines private.

The three highest bidders that exceed the minimum will be presented to users in random order next to Google Search.

Google will pick search engines randomly from the list of providers that applied if fewer than three search engines bid or if bids remain under the limit.

"An auction is a fair and objective method to determine which search providers are included in the choice screen." according to Google. Several search engine companies and operators have criticized Google for the auction system. Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of DuckDuckGo criticized the auction system in a tweet on Twitter:

A pay-to-play auction with only 4 slots means consumers won't get all the choices they deserve, and Google will profit at the expense of the competition.

Looking Back

In 2009, Microsoft faced a similar situation in the European Union. Internet Explorer was the dominating browser thanks to its inclusion in the Windows operating system. Microsoft agreed to display a browser ballot screen to users from the European Union. The screen listed up to twelve different browsers to users during setup. Browsers were selected based on popularity and displayed in random order; companies did not have to pay for inclusion.

Opera Software was one of the companies that benefited from the inclusion. The company revealed that downloads of its Opera web browser tripled after the browser ballot screen started to show up in the EU.

Closing Words

The auction system favors companies with deep pockets; while it is certainly possible that search engine providers fill out the application form without putting a bid in, it seems likely that search engine choice won't be based on popularity but on financial resources. Search engines like Startpage or DuckDuckGo cannot compete financially with multi-billion Dollar companies such as Microsoft and its Bing search engine or Yahoo, and it is quite plausible that Bing or Yahoo will dominate the listings in the EU as a consequence.

A fair system would give users more choice, and suggest the most popular search engines in each region to the user. A "more" option could also be implemented to provide users with another list of potential search engines.

Now You: What is your take on the system?

Microsoft announced plans in 2017 to disable VBScript in Internet Explorer 11; the company deprecated the feature but kept it alive for certain environments back then to give organizations enough time to migrate resources that use VBScript to other technologies.

VBScript, which was introduced by Microsoft more than two decades ago, is an active scripting language that is modeled on Visual Basic.

It came to some fame in 2000 when a computer worm known as the I Love You or Love Letter Virus, used it to infect systems. Users would get emails with the subject linke ILOVEYOU and an attachment LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs. Users who opened the attachment would infect their machines with the worm.

One of the problems back then was that Windows hid the actual extension of the attachment so that many Windows users believed that it was a harmless text file.

Infected PCs would send emails using the contacts list to spread to other machines. It would furthermore configure Windows to launch itself on start of the system and modify data in computer files.

Microsoft recommended that Microsoft Internet Explorer users disable VBScript in the browser for the Internet Zone and Restricted Sizes Zone to protect the browser against attacks targeting VBScript.

Administrators and users had to disable VBScript in Internet Explorer manually at the time.

internet explorer vbscript disable

The July 2019 cumulative updates for Windows 10 disabled VBScript by default on machines running Windows 10. The coming August 2019 cumulative updates for Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, will do the same on these machines.

VBScript will be disabled by default for Internet Explorer 11 and WebOCs for Internet and Untrusted zones on all platforms running Internet Explorer 11.

VBScript won't be removed at this time though. Microsoft notes that it is still possible to enable it on machines if the legacy technology is still needed.

The settings to enable or disable for VBScript execution in Internet Explorer 11 will remain configurable per site security zone, via Registry, or via Group Policy, should you still need to utilize this legacy scripting language.

A support article on the Microsoft Support website provides details on the available options. In short: administrators may turn on VBScript using the Registry, Group Policy (Enterprise only), or site security zone.

Closing Words

The disabling of VBScript is a long overdue step on the Home system and user side; organizations can still allow it on certain systems if legacy scripts are still used.

Now You: when was the last time you encountered a VBScript?

The Chrome Web Store for Chrome extensions hosts more than 188k extensions that have a total installation count of at least 1.23 billion; a scan by Extension Monitor brought additional details to light.

Only 13 Chrome extensions have more than 10 million users, the largest user count group that the Store uses. These 13 extensions have more than 10 million users but the exact number is not revealed.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are more than 19k extensions with 0 installs, and 50% that have fewer than 16 installs.

Extensions with fewer than 1000 installations make up about 87% of all Chrome extension installations.

Tip: check out our list of the top Chrome extensions and top Firefox add-ons.

chrome extensions user count

As far as top extensions with more than 10 million installations is concerned, it can be divided into two groups: extensions that get installed by a service or software installation, and extensions that get installed manually by users.

The following extensions are on the list at the time of writing:

  1. Adblock
  2. Adblock Plus
  3. Adobe Acrobat
  4. Avast Online Security
  5. Avast SafePrice
  6. Cisco Webex Extension
  7. Google Translate
  8. Grammarly for Chrome
  9. Honey
  10. Pinterest Save Button
  11. Skype
  12. Tampermonkey
  13. uBlock Origin

Three of the top 13 extensions are content blockers, two price comparison extensions, and five can be linked to popular programs or services.

The next tier, extensions with less than 10 million installs consists of ten additional extensions, all with an installation count of more than 6.8 million.

These are:

  1. Amazon Assistant for Chrome
  2. Avira Browser Safety
  3. AVG SafePrice
  4. Google Hangouts
  5. Google Photos
  6. Hola Free VPN Proxy Unblocker
  7. LastPass: Free Password Manager
  8. Rung Rinh
  9. Text
  10. Video Downloader for Chrome

Two official Google extensions, two extensions by security companies, the first video downloader, and others make up this group.

One surprising takeaway from the data that Extension Monitor published is that 8.9% of extensions fall into the paid category. Paid extensions are further divided into those that require payment upfront and those that use in-extension purchases.

While paid extensions make up 8.9% of all extensions in the Chrome Web Store, they make up less than 2.6% of all installs. The distribution is similar to that of free extensions. The top five paid extensions make up 48.5% of all paid installs. The dominant paid extension is IE Tab with 4.1 million installs (31.5%):

  1. anonymoX
  2. Gantter Project Management
  3. IE Tab
  4. Lucidchart Diagrams
  5. Polarr Photo Editor

Comparison to Firefox extensions

Mozilla lists installs for all Firefox add-ons on the official Mozilla AMO website. Ten Firefox extensions with more than 1 million installs are listed on AMO currently. The top extension, Adblock Plus, has roughly 9 million installs.

Adblockers make up the bulk of top Firefox extensions and you find several that made up the Chrome top list as well.

Firefox users have an advantage when it comes to video downloaders as Chrome extensions face limitations imposed by Google (no YouTube dowloads).

Closing Words

Is the number of installations an important metric? It is an indicator and it is certainly the case that extensions with lots of installs are pushed more than extensions with fewer installs.

Clickbait Remover for YouTube is a browser extension for Google Chrome that removes clickbait video thumbnails on the video hosting and streaming site.

Update: A port is now also available for Firefox.

YouTube publishers have several options when it comes to the selection of a video thumbnail for uploaded videos. Publishers may use a frame of the uploaded video as the thumbnail or another image; the latter does not need to be from the video and some publishers use it effectively by selecting thumbnails that don't necessarily reflect the content of the video.

Common clickbait thumbnails include exaggerations, stylized thumbnails, or thumbnails of barely clothed women. Basically, any thumbnail that is designed primarily to attract the attention of the YouTube visitor instead of depicting the actual video content is considered clickbait.

Note: The extension requests access to the browsing history currently. The developer changed that so that it does not need to request the -- rather scary -- permission anymore. A new version has been uploaded to the Chrome Web Store and will be made available in the coming days.? Interested users may check the source on GitHub for verification.

Clickbait Remover for YouTube addresses the issue directly. It is designed to replace video thumbnails on YouTube with a frame from the video. The extension uses an official YouTube feature for that; the service creates video thumbnails automatically when videos are uploaded and preserves those even if the publisher picks a custom video thumbnail for the uploaded video.

youtube clickbait video thumbnails

A frame from the start of the video is picked automatically by the extension. A click on the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar displays options to change that to a frame from the middle of the video or the end of the video.

There is also an option to use the default thumbnail image selected by the publisher; may be useful to compare the publisher's selected thumbnail image with the images taken directly from the video.

The extension may also adjust the titles of YouTube videos by forcing them to be all lowercase or capitalizing the first letter only; this takes care of publishers that use all-caps in titles to draw even more attention to their videos.

The extension works on all pages on YouTube including searches, the homepage, trending pages, channels, or the subscriptions page.? The extension should work in other Chromium-based browsers such as Vivaldi, Opera, Brave, or Microsoft Edge but I did not test that.

Closing Words

Clickbait Remover for YouTube is a useful extension that deals with certain forms of clickbait on YouTube. It replaces custom video thumbnail images with stills from the video itself; this deals with clickbait attempts and gives users a better idea of a video's quality and content.

Microsoft integrated the security solution Windows Defender Antivirus deeply in the Windows operating system. It is enabled by default on the company's Windows 10 operating system so that it can protect devices from the moment they are booted for the first time.

Previously, systems did not really have protection until users decided to install antivirus solutions on devices.

Microsoft revealed recently that Windows Defender Antivirus has a share of more than 50% on Windows; the solution is the primary antivirus solution on more than 500 million Windows devices and growth continues.

The market share of Windows Defender Antivirus makes it a prime target for attacks that bypass its protections. If an attacker manages to find a way through the defenses offered by the security solution, a large part of Windows systems would be vulnerable as a consequence. Kaspersky called Microsoft out in 2016 stating that Microsoft's integration was anti-competitive.

Microsoft told ZDnet that it predicted that Windows Defender Antivirus would become a high priority target and that it invested in defensive mechanisms to improve protections. In Windows 10 version 1903, Windows Defender got a new anti-tamper protection feature, and it uses a sandbox since 2018.

The most recent test on AV-Test, an independent test site for security solutions, awarded Windows Defender Antivirus a perfect score. Microsoft's security program got the perfect score in protection, performance, and usability.

windows defender 500 million

Granted, it was not the only tool that received a perfect score in the test. Three third-party security solutions -- Norton Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, and F-Secure Safe -- managed to get a perfect score as well. Five additional security solutions got recommendations as well.

Windows Defender Antivirus may be the default security solution but it is designed to disable itself automatically when an administrator installs another security solution on a Windows machine.

No antivirus solution offers 100% protection against all threats; it is clear that Windows Defender has improved over the years. One of the program's main advantages is that it is deeply integrated in the operating system. Third-party developers face problems sometimes when Microsoft releases new versions of Windows.

Avast Antivirus users ran into issues frequently in recent time on Windows 10. In 2018, some reported that Windows would boot into a blank desktop after an upgrade, and in 2019, systems with Avast business solutions installed would become unresponsive after update installation. Other security solutions, e.g. by McAfee.

The Linux Mint team released a new version of the Linux distribution on August 2, 2019. Linux Mint 19.2 is already available in the three supported flavors Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce.

The new version is a long-term service release; it will be supported until 2023 and is already available on the official website of the project. 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce are provided. The release follows Linux Mint 19.1 and Linux Mint 19.0 which we reviewed here.

Highlights of the release are reduced RAM usage, and Update Manager and Software Manager improvements.

Check out our guide on upgrading Linux Mint if you don't know how to upgrade from an earlier version of the Linux distribution.

linux mint 19.2 desktop

Some new features, improvements and fixes apply to all supported desktop environments, others are environment specific.

The update manager features several kernel-related improvements. It displays the support time for kernels in Linux Mint 19.2 and supports the queuing of kernel installations or removals so that it is no longer necessary to install or remove kernels one-by-one anymore. It is furthermore possible to configure the Update Manager to remove older kernels automatically that are no longer needed.

The team added support for kernel flavors in the new release making it possible to switch between non-generic and and generic kernels.

The update manager features others improvements. Administrators may now blacklist specific package versions opposed to the entire package; this allows for the installation of package updates at a later point in time.

The Software Manager displays applications installed by it and through other means thanks to a new cache that is used by it in this release. It features two additional options: add missing keys to scan repositories and PPAs for missing keys to download them to the system, and remove duplicate sources to find and fix duplicate definitions.

Mintreport, the system reports tool, has a new look and uses a different layout. It features a new system information page to make it easier to copy and paste system information.

Several XApps tools were improved:

  • Some tools were updated to support the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-Q.
  • Blueberry systray menu features an option to connect or disconnect paired devices with a mouse click.
  • The default text editor Xed supports toggling comments and comment blocks.
  • The login screen configuration tool features a new option to set a delay for automatic logins.

Cinnamon 4.2 features

  • Cinnamon should use significantly less RAM than previous versions.
  • Muffin window manager should feel smoother and more responsive thanks to optimizations.
  • VSync can be turned on or off without restarting Cinnamon.
  • Several internal components, e.g. Appsys or DocInfo, were simplified.
  • Application menu is faster and more responsive. Xed and Gedit text editors, and Flatpack installations of installed applications are now distinguishable.
  • Option to change scrollbar width in System Settings.
  • Option to pin files added.
  • Improved Samba support.

MATE 1.22 features

  • Configure delay for applications that start automatically.
  • Metacity-3 theme support.
  • Window and desktop switchers look better.
  • Session manager features better systemd support.
  • Desktop notifications for long-running file operations.
  • New compression formats support.
  • New key shortcuts for different types of media keys.
  • Boot repair option added to the installation ISO images.
  • Design, theme and color changes.

Closing Words

Linux Mint 19.2 introduces several new features and improvements. Cinnamon devices should use less RAM and feel more responsive when used, and all desktop environments benefit from new update manager and software manager features.
